Everyone has their own workflow for making fonts, and here’s my way of creating handwriting fonts efficiently:
- Initial Design with Adobe Illustrator
I start with Adobe Illustrator, using the InkFlow tool from the Astute Graphics plugin. This makes it easy to create strokes with that classic calligraphy feel—thin upstrokes and smooth, flowing lines. Afterward, I refine each character with PathScribe, ensuring the paths look natural and well-balanced. - Font Creation with Fontself
Once satisfied with the characters, I use Fontself to transform the designs into a functional OTF font. This step saves a lot of time compared to traditional methods. - Fine-Tuning in FontLab
For final optimizations, I bring the font into FontLab:- Add missing glyphs.
- Adjust metrics and spacing.
- Perfect kerning for better character interaction.
- Export final files in TTF and OTF formats.
- Creating Previews
I create preview images in Illustrator and use tools like Foooocus to generate unique background visuals for added flair.
This workflow balances creativity and efficiency, letting me focus on what matters—making fonts that look and feel amazing!
